Why an ice dam is more than frozen eavestrough
An ice dam forms when snow melts on a warmer part of a roof, runs toward a colder eave, and refreezes. More meltwater can then collect behind that ice. If water reaches a vulnerable shingle, flashing, valley, or roof-edge detail, it can move into the roof assembly and appear indoors during a thaw.
The ice is easy to see, but the cause may be higher up. Heat carried through attic air leaks, uneven insulation, blocked ventilation paths, roof geometry, a warm exhaust route, and sun exposure can all affect where snow melts. That is why clearing the gutter alone does not establish that the underlying problem is solved.
Warning signs worth documenting
From the ground, note thick ice along one eave, icicles that keep returning in the same area, a strip of bare roof below otherwise even snow, or ice below a valley or dormer. Indoors, watch for water marks near exterior walls, damp insulation, peeling paint, or moisture that appears specifically during a freeze-thaw cycle.
A photo sequence is more useful than one close-up. Capture the whole roof plane, the problem eave, the rooms below it, and the dates and weather conditions when moisture appeared. This helps a roofer compare the indoor symptom with roof geometry instead of guessing from the ceiling stain alone.
If water is entering now, deal with safety first
Move belongings away from the wet area and collect drips only where it is safe. Keep people away from a sagging ceiling, wet electrical fixture, or falling ice, and contact the appropriate emergency service or qualified trade when there is an immediate electrical or structural hazard.
Do not climb onto an icy roof or attack an ice dam with an axe, shovel, or ice pick. Canadian government guidance warns that mechanical ice removal can be dangerous and can damage the roof. Whether snow or ice can be removed safely depends on roof access, pitch, weather, the location of overhead hazards, and the equipment and training available.
A useful assessment separates three different jobs
First is the urgent water-entry problem: identify the likely path, protect the interior, and determine whether temporary exterior work is safe. Second is roof damage: inspect shingles or membrane, roof edges, valleys, flashing, underlayment exposure, gutters, and any previous patches. Third is recurrence: investigate why that section of roof warmed enough to melt snow.
Those jobs may involve more than one specialist. A roofer can assess the roof covering and visible leak details. Air sealing, insulation, exhaust ducting, or a difficult attic assembly may require an energy advisor, insulation contractor, HVAC contractor, or other qualified professional. A quote should make those boundaries clear.
Start prevention with attic air leakage and insulation
Natural Resources Canada identifies attic air sealing and thorough insulation as the preferred prevention approach for most houses. Common leakage paths can include attic hatches, plumbing and wiring penetrations, pot lights, chimney chases, and poorly sealed exhaust routes. Damp or discoloured insulation and frost after a cold snap can provide clues, but attic access itself may be unsafe or restricted.
More insulation is not a universal first move. Existing moisture sources and air leaks should be understood before insulation is added, and some older materials should not be disturbed without proper assessment. The goal is a continuous thermal and air-control layer that keeps household heat out of the attic and the roof deck more evenly cold.
Ventilation supports the assembly, but more is not always better
Soffit and roof vents should be correctly located and free of insulation or debris that blocks the intended path. Ventilation can help remove moisture that reaches the attic and keep the roof space colder, but NRCan notes that vents do not correct the problems created by air leakage.
Adding a powered fan or mixing vent types without understanding the air path can create new pressure and moisture problems. The right approach depends on whether the home has an open attic, cramped eaves, cathedral ceilings, a flat or low-slope roof, dormers, or several roof transitions. Have the actual assembly reviewed before ordering a generic ventilation upgrade.
What the roofing review should cover before snow arrives
At the roof, check the eaves, valleys, wall intersections, skylights, vents, chimney flashing, shingles or membrane, and evidence of prior ice-related damage. Eavestroughs and downspouts should drain properly, but they are only part of the water path. An ice-and-water membrane beneath shingles can reduce leakage risk when installed in the right locations; it does not stop an ice dam from forming.
Ask the roofer to distinguish maintenance from repair and root-cause work. The written scope should say what was visible, which roof detail is being repaired, whether attic conditions were reviewed, what access was unavailable, and which concerns need another trade. That gives you a plan for the house instead of a seasonal patch sold as a cure.
A practical Toronto pre-winter checklist
Before persistent snow, gather photos from the last winter, note rooms below recurring ice, confirm bathroom and kitchen exhausts discharge outdoors, and arrange a roof or attic review where the evidence points. Clear drainage only from safe access and keep roof edges above entrances, walkways, and parking areas in mind when planning winter safety.
If the home has never leaked and the snow pattern is even, monitoring may be enough. If ice returns in one location, water appears during thaws, attic frost is visible, or past repairs have not held, investigate before the next freeze-thaw cycle. Prevention is strongest when the roof and attic findings are considered together.
